Dustin Poirier def. Conor McGregor via KO in round number two at UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi.
It was a highly anticipated return for the biggest star in combat sports, but Dustin Poirier came to silence the doubters and out-boxed McGregor in an onslaught of punches before McGregor slumps to the mat and referee Herb Dean calls it off.
Conor started fast and accurate, but stayed patient and looked ready to fight a five round battle. Poirier had success in landing a takedown in the opening round, but McGregor was quick to get back to his feet and the two clinched against the fence. The two lightweights traded elbows and shoulder strikes whilst they clinched for the better half of the first round, eventually separating and meeting in the middle of the octagon to trade strikes. Poirier is having less success boxing against McGregor but is landing hard calf kicks on the Irishman. But, McGregor used his impeccable distance and accuracy, whilst also landing more strikes in the clinch to secure him a 10-9 first round.
The second round opened much liked the first, the two were putting on a beautiful technical boxing performance and trading blows. Poirier continues his calf kicks on McGregor and it’s clear it’s starting to take it’s toll. Eventually, Poirier lands a clean shot and it’s clear McGregor is hurt, he manages to roll with a lot of the punches but is caught by Poirier’s hard shots and falls to the mat until Herb Dean is forced to stop the fight.
The two fighters were all class post-fight, McGregor praised Poirier’s leg kicks and said “I have to dust it off and come back” whilst Poirier said “We’re 1 and 1, maybe we have to do it again”. I think every MMA fan would quite happily see a trilogy bout between the two lightweights after they both put on spectacular performances in Abu Dhabi.
Michael Chandler also put the lightweight division on notice, picking up a TKO win over Dan Hooker in the very first round of their co-main event. Chandler went on to call out Poirier, McGregor and Khabib.
